A method for pretreating lignocellulosic and cellulosic biomass for the use of carbohydrates or lignin from biomass, comprising the steps of inoculating a lignocellulose-decomposing brown rot fungus into the lignocellulosic biomass and incubating the inoculated biomass under conditions in which the growth of lignocellulose-decomposing lignocellulose is accelerated. Incubation can be carried out under conditions in which the growth of brown rot decomposing lignocellulose is accelerated, with its termination in less than 50, 40, 30, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14 , 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 or 4 days, or before significant depletion of biomass in glucose occurs.
