The gene responsible for SERT coding has a functional polymorphism in the 5-regulatory promoter region, resulting in two forms, long (L) and short (S). It is assumed that the LL genotype is essential for early alcohol intake. The present invention discloses differences in treatment and diagnosis with regard to L or S genotypes, as well as with regard to a single nucleotide polymorphism of the SERT gene, 3'- UTR SNP rs1042173. The present invention demonstrates the efficacy of using ondansetron and similar drugs for treatment, taking into account options in the SERT gene polymorphism, as well as methods for diagnosing susceptibility to alcohol addiction (irrepressible desire for drunkenness) and other addictive diseases and disorders.
