IL-optimised server virtualisation platform

The present invention relates to computer virtualisation, which is the technical art of making one physical computer device appear as multiple virtual machines. The invention provides a virtualisation platform (1), comprised of a server computer (2) running a native code operating system (3) and a managed cade virtualisation runtime (4) based on IL (Intermedicate Language) as defined in the ECMA-335 standard, which virtualises the internal comuter resources and provides virtual machines (VMs)optimised for running managed code software applications (12). The virtualisation runtime comprises of a platform runtime (9) which manages the entire platform, a VM runtime (10) which controls the VM's interaction with its applications and the platform, and an app runtime (1!) which controls the application's interaction with the VM. The advantage of this invention is that the VMs are optimised for running managed code applications and avoid duplication of functionality (e.g device drivers, thread schedulers) with the underlying native code operating system and this results in radically simplified configuration and better performance.
