: The present invention provides a method for detection of diseased cells and pathogens in tissue sections using fluorescent probe of organically modified silica nanoparticles. The nanoparticle surface is modified by functionalizing with biological and synthetic molecules for facilitating highly specific detection. Overlaying the tissue section with nanoparticle dispersion and in situ observation under fluorescent microscope leads to detection of the diseased cells and pathogens within a short time.
