A method for producing a coherent gas jet (5), wherein at least one gas jet (5) is passed from at least one nozzle (2) into an injection volume (7), said nozzle(s) (2) being housed in a lance (3) having a lance face (6) and communicating with the injection volume (7) at the lance face (6), characterized in that: the lance face (6) has a recession (10) therein around the nozzle(s)(2); liquid fuel (11) is passed into the recession (10) on the lance face (6); motive gas (13) is passed into the recession (10), creating a flow of liquid fuel (11) within the recession (10), the liquid fuel (11) is atomized, and atomized liquid fuel (11) is passed out from the recession (10) into the injection volume (7) annularly to the gas jet(s) (5); and oxidant is passed into the injection volume (7) and the oxidant is combusted with the atomized liquid fuel (11) to produce a flame shroud around the gas jet(s) (5).
