Described is a novel method for removing the metallic ions (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Hg, Pb, Na, Zn) from water resulting from human consumption wells using galacturonic acid in complete mix reactors at a pH of from about 3.5 to about 4.0, where the galacturonic acid is mixed with the polluted water; after a period of 10 min of agitation at 200 rpm the water is filtrated by gravity in a marine sand filter of fine granulometry of 2.5 microns contained in a glass column, thus obtaining water of quality free of metallic ions.
