Embedding bits into segmented regions of an image based on statistical features

Disclosed is a method of watermarking an image. The method includes segmenting the image into regions, and characterizing each region based upon one or more statistical features of respective regions. The method then includes, for each of the regions: selecting one of a predetermined number of watermarking methods based on the characterization of the respective region; selecting a number of bits to be embedded into the respective region based on the characterization of the region; and embedding the number of bits of data into the respective region using the watermarking method selected for the region. A method for decoding the image by applying the reverse of this method is also disclosed.
