Controlling a kiln using a drying schedule with adjustable step parameters

Disclosed is a method of controlling a kiln for drying a charge of lumber. The method includes providing a drying schedule with sequential steps, monitoring conditions associated with the operation of the kiln, and advancing from one step to the next when determined by the schedule. During operation in each respective step kiln drying parameters are adjusted in accordance with changes to the monitored conditions to achieve the prescribed parameters for that step. Each step of the schedule provides for a plurality of different sets of prescribed parameters. The schedule provides for selection of the required set of parameters for the step, the parameters dependent on the monitored conditions and/or mode of kiln operation to influence moisture adsorption, absorption, or redistribution.
