A method for determining liver function in a subject by determining the functional activity of the hepatocyte transport proteins MRP2 (Multidrug Resistance Protein 2) also known as ABCC2, MRP3 (Multidrug resistance Protein 2) also known as ABCC3 or OATP1B3 (organic anion transporting polypeptide) also known as SLCO1B3. The method comprises determining the level of a fluorescent bile acid derivative with the general formula (I) in a sample of blood taken from a subject after a predetermined time. The fluorescent bile acid derivative can be cholyl-lysyl-fluorescein (CLF).
