The use of a resin modified acidic ion exchange catalyst for preparing bisphenol, wherein at least one kind of cationic compound selected from the following (B) and (D) is ionically bonded to an acidic functional group of an ion exchange resin acid ion: (B) a cationic compound represented by the formula (2): ** (See formula) ** wherein N represents a nitrogen atom, and R1, R2, R3 and R4 independently represent an alkyl group or aryl group, each of which contains 1 to 20 carbon atoms and contains no mercapto group or precursor thereof and an amide bond; (D) an N-substituted cationic nitrogen-containing which contains no mercapto group, a precursor thereof or amide bond, aromatic wherein said aromatic N-substituted cationic nitrogen-containing is an N-methylpyridinium, one cetylpyridinium salt, dodecylpyridinium salt, an N-methylquinolinium salt or N-ethylquinolinium.
