A method of detecting a deletion spanning about nucleotides 10744-14124 of the genome of human mtDNA, wherein said deletion is associated with prostate cancer in a subject having mtDNA, comprising: (a) providing a biological sample obtained from the subject; and (b) detecting the presence of mtDNA deletion.
