In vitro method for selectively inducing apoptosis in DR5-expressing target cells, comprising the steps of (a) contacting the target cells with a therapeutic amount of an antibody that specifically binds to the TRAIL DR5 receptor, where the antibody is an antibody that has the same epitope specificity as the TRA-8 mouse-mouse hybridoma that has the ATCC accession number PTA-1428, where said antibody, in its soluble form, has apoptosis inducing activity in vivo and in vitro in target cells expressing DR5 and (b) contacting the target cells with a therapeutic amount of an antibody that specifically binds to a DR4 TRAIL receptor, where the antibody is an antibody that has the same epitope specificity as the mouse-mouse hybridoma 2E12 which has the accession number to the ATCC PTA-3798, where said antibody has apoptosis inducing activity in vivo and in vitro in target cells that express DR4.
