A process for the preparation of a composite particle (34) comprising the step of contacting zinc-containing particles with a noble metal solution (38) at an adjusted pH, wherein said zinc-containing particles comprise zinc oxide or depleted zinc oxide; and wherein said noble metal (38) is in the form of an aqueous solution or suspension and the pH is maintained between 5 and 6.
