Method of predicting pre-eclampsia (PE) comprising determining in a obtained maternal sample from a patient is between 10 and 38 weeks gestation, the level of receptor 1 tumor necrosis factor alpha soluble (sTNFαR1) and Matrix Metalloproteinase -9 (MMP-9), wherein a positive prediction is determined by a level of MMP-9 and statistically significantly lower level sTNFαR1 statistically significantly higher than normal levels obtained from pregnant women.
