SELECTIVE ACCEPTANCE OF SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE (SMS) MESSAGES IN A CELLULAR TELEPHONE NETWORK

Selective acceptance of short messagesenables a cellular subscriber to predeterminewhich short message will actually be deliveredto the subscriber's mobile station. Using anUnstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)transmission, the subscriber determines whichselection criteria will be used and then buildsin the network Home Location Register (HLR)a list of originating entities from which shortmessages will either be accepted or rejected. Ascreening application resident on the HLR thendetermines the identity of the entity associatedwith any request for short message routinginformation and causes the short message to bedelivered or deleted according to the input providedby the subscriber. A confirmation message isreturned to the originating entity indicatingdelivery or the reason for failure.
