A dual technology motion or occupancy sensor, and a method for using thesame, to control a lighting circuit to activate and deactivate lights in amonitored area. Thesensor employs an infrared energy sensor, a microwave energy sensor, and acontroller. Theinfrared energy sensor outputs an infrared energy detection signal indicativeof detection ornon-detection of infrared energy, and the microwave energy sensor outputs amicrowaveenergy detection signal indicative of detection or non-detection of microwaveenergy. Thecontroller outputs a control signal to control activation and deactivation ofthe lighting circuitin response to a condition of the infrared energy detection signal and acondition of themicrowave energy detection signal. Specifically, the controller activates thelighting circuitto turn on the lights in the monitored area when the infrared energy detectionsignal andmicrowave energy detection signal indicate occupancy or motion in themonitored area, andmaintains the lights in the active state as long as either the microwaveenergy sensor or theinfrared energy sensor sense occupancy or motion in the monitored area.
