The present invention provides for automatic placement of typographicalfeatures such as vertical stems or horizontal segments of a character (205) onhigh contrast pixel sub-component boundaries as part of a rendering processthat uses separately controllable pixel sub-components (202, 203, 204) ofpixels to represent different portions of the character (205). In order toidentify the typographical features of the character (205) that are to bealigned with high contrast pixel sub-component boundaries, topology of thecharacter is analyzed at runtime. In display devices having vertical stripesof same-colored pixel sub-components (202, 203, 204), it has been found thatcharacter legibility is increased when the left edges of stems (206) arealigned with high contrast boundaries (208) between pixel sub-components.Processing time and resources are conserved by performing a partial, ratherthan a full, topological analysis of the character. For example, some fontfiles include data structures that define the position of key control pointsassociated with the character, thereby indicating where the stems or othertypographical features are located, and the relationship between differenttypographical features.
