A treatment solution used to prevent posterior capsular opacification isappied or introduced into the lens capsular bag before, during, or aftercataract surgery. The treatment solution comprises an ion transport mechanisminterference agent, which either alone or in combination with other treatmentagents such as an osmotic stress agent and an agent to establish a suitablepH, selectively induces detachment and/or death of lens epithelial cells suchthat posterior capsular opacification is prevented. While the ion tranposrtmechanism interference agent is capable of interfering with the cellularmechanisms and cell ion distribution of a broad range of cells, aconcentration of agent is selected such that the treatment solution interferesselectively with the cellular mechanisms of lens epithelial cells whileleaving other ocular cells substantially unharmed. The treatment solutionselectively induces cellular death and/or detachment of lens epithelial cellswhile other ocular cells and tissue remain substantially unharmed and withoutlengthly preoperative pre-treatment.
