ADAPTIVE NAVIGATION OF DATA SETS BASED ON PREFERENCES

A system organizes sets of items for navigation, education, selection, and/oracquisition. Sets of itemsare organized into hierarchical groups according to item attributes andexplicitly and implicitlyexpressed user and/or content provider preferences. Preferences arerepresented by a preference modelthat may include a utility function that specifies which types of items arepreferred and in which orderaccording to a specific set of preferences. Optimization techniques may beused to find the optimalparameter values for the preference model. The preference model may be updatedover time to reflectincreased knowledge gathered about the user's and content provider'spreferences. Each group of itemsmay include a representative item and a corresponding group description.Representative items andgroup descriptions may be selected and displayed using the user preferencemodel. The system mayreceive explicit input when the user submits a query to the keyword search orfilters.
