An arrangement for making the atmos. in the containment (1) of a nuclear power plant inert, eg after a fault when an explosive gas mixt. can build up with hydrogen as a reactive component, comprises a number of parallel switched outlet opening (9) for an inert gas. The flow speed of the inert gas in the outlet openings (9) is greater than 0.3 times the speed of sound of the gas. When all outlet openings are used for inert gas injection, the oxygen content in the containment atmos. is less than 17 vol.% after about 2 minutes.
