Provided is a grinding method for a hard and brittle material by which, when a hole is formed in the hard and brittle material using a grinding drill, the grinding time of the hard and brittle material can be shortened.A grinding method for a hard and brittle material (2) by which a hole (3) is formed on a planar portion (17) of the substantially planar shaped hard and brittle material (2), using a grinding drill (7) which comprises a shank (20) functioning as a rotational shaft and provided with a grinding whetstone (21), wherein the method comprises a grinding step wherein a grinding surface (23) is provided on at least an outer peripheral surface of the grinding whetstone (21) around the shaft, the shaft center of the shank (20) of the grinding drill (7) is inclined with respect to the perpendicular line (P) of the planar portion (17) of the hard and brittle material (2), and the hard and brittle material (2) is ground by abutting the outer peripheral surface of the grinding whetstone (21)to the planar portion (17) of the hard and brittle material (2) and moving the grinding drill (7)in the direction of the perpendicular line (P).
