The invention relates to a method for determining an operational quantity enabling simplified and optimized management, for operating equipment receiving irradiated samples (100), said operational quantity being attached to a given irradiated sample and to equipment including specific types of protective shielding (102), and being an equivalent activity in a reference radioelement derived from an equivalent point source of an irradiated sample, which is calculated by taking account of the potentially existing radioelements and the measurements taken by an ionization chamber and a gamma ray spectroscopy chain; the method includes a step of preliminary calculations (201), a step of calculating a point source (202), and a step of calculating the equivalent activity in a reference radioelement (203).
