According to the invention, compact ceramics (1) with good ionic conduction at high temperatures, such as yttria-stablised zirconia (YSZ), scandia-stabilised zirconia (SSZ), gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) or any other, are used to obtain self-supporting thin electrolyte membranes by means of laser machining, the ends of which membranes are supported by a material having the same composition and, consequently, the same thermal expansion coefficient, thereby providing said electrolyte membranes with an absolute thermal stability and sufficient structural strength so that solid oxide fuel cells, electrolyser cells or oxygen sensors can be constructed thereon.
