Disclosed is an Li-Ni composite oxide particle powder for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, wherein, in an Li-Ni composite oxide having a composition LixNi1-y-zCoyMzZraBibSbcO2 [wherein 0.9≤x≤1.3, 0.1≤y≤0.35, 0z≤0.35, 0≤a≤0.025, 0.0002≤b≤0.004, 0≤c≤0.002, and, in the case c≠0, 1.2≤b/c; and M stands for at least one kind of element selected from Al and Mn], the average primary particle diameter of primary particles constituting secondary particles is 1-4 μm, and excessive lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate remaining during calcination have been removed therefrom. When used as a positive electrode active material of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, the aforesaid Li-Ni composite oxide particle powder shows a large discharge capacity and generates little gas in high-temperature charging.
