The invention relates to a method for preparing a composition, characterised in that it comprises the steps of: a) preparing an aqueous solution of at least one comb polymer of (meth)acrylic acid having an alkoxy and/or hydroxy polyalkylene glycol function grafted thereon; b) preparing an aqueous emulsion of at least one acrylic thickener; c) mixing the aqueous solution of step a) and the aqueous emulsion of step b) with the optional addition of water; and in that it comprises partially neutralising the comb polymer during step a) and/or step c) in order to obtain a mixture having a pH between 5.5 and 6.8, preferably between 5.8 and 6.3. The invention also relates to the product thus obtained and to the use thereof in a paper coating slip as a thickening agent for said slip and/or as a water retention agent for said slip and/or as an agent for improving the gloss and/or the optical azuration of the paper coated with said slip.
