An anchor handover method and system for a Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wimax) system is provided. The method includes: after a terminal completes a Wimax Access Service Network (ASN) anchored handover, a source access gateway (AGW) sends a handover request to a destination AGW, the destination AGW selects a destination identity and location central router (ILCR), and establishes a tunnel when a transmission tunnel for the data message of the terminal is not established with the destination ILCR; the destination ILCR,when it is different from the source ILCR, allocates a new routing identifier (RID) which points to the destination ILCR to the terminal, and determines the information of the connection between the terminal and a communication peer according to the data message of the terminal, and sends a RID update flow to the access gateway of the communication peer of the terminal, which carries the access identifier (AID) and the new RID of the terminal; and the destination AGW sends a handover response to the source AGW, after the handover is completed, the message between the terminal and the communication peer is transmitted via the destination ILCR and the destination AGW. The method and system can implement an unfixed anchor handover.
