Disclosed are an afterimage alleviation device and an afterimage alleviation method capable of alleviating, with a simple configuration, afterimages that occur on display screens. An afterimage alleviation device (100), being employed in an image projecting display device, comprising an illumination adjustment unit (130) that adjusts a light quantity from a light source, includes a liquid crystal panel (120) that, on the basis of an image signal, modulates light, the light quantity whereof is adjusted with the illumination adjustment unit (130), and displays the light thus modulated as an image; and a control unit (140) that determines, on the basis of a new image signal and an image signal that is received immediately prior to the new image signal, whether the image that is displayed in the image signal is a still image, and increases or decreases the light quantity that is adjusted with the illumination adjustment unit (130) according to the result thereof.
