Disclosed is a fuel cell electricity generation system provided with: a fuel cell (11); a fuel generator (12); a cathode gas feeder (13); an output controller (14); an open/close mechanism, and a controller (20). The controller (20) reduces the amount of electric power withdrawn from the fuel cell (11) during the shut-down process. Afterwards, the controller (20) controls the output controller (14) so as to shut down the supply of electric power to an external load, and as well as shutting down the supply of cathode gas from the cathode gas feeder (13), closes the upstream-side route of a cathode gas flow channel (2) using the open/close mechanism. After closing the upstream-side route of the cathode gas flow channel (2), the controller (20) shuts down a source gas feeder (16) and a water feeder (15) after the passage of a predetermined time in which the contents of the cathode gas flow channel (2) are substituted with an anode gas cross leaked via an electrolyte membrane (11A). Afterwards, the controller (20) closes the upstream-side route of an anode gas channel (1) and the downstream-side route of the anode gas channel (1) using the open/close mechanism.
