The method involves passing a milled item (G) into roll stands (2, 3) comprising roll gaps (WS1, WS2), where the milled item extends between the roll stands. Adjusting units e.g. loop lifters (5), roller (5') and hydraulic cylinders (6, 7), are provided between the roll stands for adjusting different tensile stress distribution in width direction of the milled item, where the stress distribution is effected in a region of the roll gaps. Position of the milled item is influenced by adjusting the tensile stress distribution and detected relative to a transport route. An independent claim is also included for a multi-stand rolling mill for rolling a milled item.
