A method of operating a submerged arc welding system, wherein a first supply of welding wire (2) and a second supply of welding wire (2) are provided, the first and the second supplies each having a forward end and a rearward end, wherein the rearward end of the first supply is welded to the forward end of the second supply such that a weld is formed which can be fed through the submerged arc welding system.
