The method involves detecting the neuronal activity of the brain of a person in response to an acoustic stimulus. A measure of listening effort is determined from the detected neuronal activity. One of the hearing device parameters is changed as a function of the measure of listening effort determined. The determination is repeated and monitored by a computation and control unit until the measure of listening effort drops below a predefinable threshold value or is minimized in terms of a defined termination condition that can be predefined in the computation and control unit. An independent claim is also included for a device for the automatic, recursive adjustment of a hearing device worn by a person, where the device comprises a stimulus generator unit.
