PURPOSE: A hierarchical time-division-multiple-access(HTDMA) media-access-control(MAC) protocol for clustered underwater acoustic network is provided to increase the using rate of a channel by reducing the number of time slots in an idle state. CONSTITUTION: Time-division-multiple-access(TDMA)1 simultaneously receives various applications. The TDMA1 transmits data from underwater to a base station located on the land. TDMA2 is applied to each application. Middle base stations are shared in order to the mobile restriction of the TDMA. The using rate of a channel is increased by reducing the number of time slots in an idle state. The cycle of the TDMA2 is determined based on the mobility information of underwater nodes which are shared in the middle base states using the TDMA1.
