PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing Cornus kousa Burg. fruit extract is provided to suppress human acyl-CoA(hACAT) and to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases. CONSTITUTION: A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating cardiovascular diseases due to hypercholesterolemia contains Cornus kousa Burg. fruit extract as an active ingredient. The Cornus kousa Burg. fruit extract is isolated from Cornus kousa Burg. fruit using alcohol aqueous solution or isolated by double-boiling. The pharmaceutical composition contains Cornus kousa Burg. fruit fraction as an active ingredient. The fraction is obtained using ethyl acetate and H_2O and by extracting H_2O layer using n-butanol. The pharmaceutical composition also contains triterpene compounds from the fraction or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. The triterpene compounds is ursolic acid of chemical formula 1, corosolic acid of chemical formula 2, taraxasterol of chemical formula 3, betulinic acid of chemical formula 4, or betulinic aldehyde of chemical formula 5.
