PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for detecting and tracking an object based on an adaptive background are provided to detect an object having minute movement by a current background frame adaptive to a current image frame. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for detecting and tracking an object based on an adaptive background comprises: a distance calculating unit(110), a background generating unit(120), an object detection unit(130), an object tracking unit(140) and an object coefficient unit(150). The distance calculating unit calculates the minimum Euclid distance between pixels corresponding to a reference pixel based on the position of each pixel in an image frame. The background generating unit generates a current background frame by summing up each pixel value. The object detection unit determines a region which includes pixels larger than a reference difference value as an object region. The object tracking unit tracks the movement path of an object by calculating the motion vector between a corresponding object and the object region.
