PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for requesting an uplink resource for the transmission of an RNG-REQ in a communication system are provided to request the allocation of an uplink resource to a base station through a ranging request message or a bandwidth request header in a terminal if the allocated uplink resource is smaller than the size of the ranging request message. CONSTITUTION: If the size of allocated uplink resource is smaller than the size of an RNG-REQ message, a terminal generates a bandwidth request message(333,335). The terminal transfers the bandwidth request message to a base station through the allocated uplink resources(337), and receives re-allocated uplink resources from the base station through a CDMA_Allocation_IE(339). The terminal transfers the RNG-REQ message through the re-allocated UL resources(341).
