PURPOSE: A method for quantizing and inversely quantizing 3D mesh data is provided to change a quantization part of AFX(Animation Framework eXtension) of MPEG-4(Moving Picture Expert Group-4), thereby providing an improved result and entirely reducing quantization error by 40%. CONSTITUTION: Quantization ranges are differently set per x, y and z axes of a vector value of 3D mesh data. Quantization is performed using maximum values and minimum values of vector values per the set x, y, and z axes. Inverse quantization ranges are differently set per x, y and z axes of the vector value of the 3D mesh data. Inverse quantization is performed using maximum values and minimum values of vector values per the set x, y, and z axes.
