The present invention discloses a network peripheral driver maintenance framework and a corresponding method. The framework includes a driver version identification level that includes a set of driver version descriptions. Each driver version description includes a series of component versions that make up each particular driver version. The driver component level, which is a lower level of the driver version identification level, includes uniquely identified component versions (containers), which comprise a series of driver files that constitute the component versions identified by the driver versions. The present invention also discloses a method for maintaining a plurality of network peripheral drivers that are active at the same time. The method includes storing a new driver on the device through a method comprising the following steps performed by the device. Initially, the device sets up a container in the directory structure for storing a set of driver files that make up a version of a driver component. The new container is assigned a unique identifier name.
