FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate wastes to obtain benzoic acid. The method involves heating a mixture of crushed polyethylene terephthalate wastes and a catalyst, condensation of the formed benzoic acid and subsequent extraction thereof. Heating is carried out at atmospheric pressure without access to atmospheric oxygen at temperature 250-350°C for 1 hour 20 minutes. The catalyst used is an acetyl acetonate complex of iron (III).;EFFECT: recycling polyethylene terephthalate wastes, which improves the ecological situation in the region, obtaining benzoic acid, low power consumption owing to reduction of the temperature for pyrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate.;2 cl, 1 tbl, 1 dwg, 2 ex
