Calcining green briquettes, preferably coal based green briquettes, in which the green briquettes are subjected to heat treatment, comprises mixing the green briquettes together with coal, which exhibits a portion of volatile combustible components, and calcining in a shaft furnace (110). The energy required for the calcination is obtained at least partially by the combustion of portion of volatile combustible components of the coal. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing briquettes using above method, comprising combing the coke produced during the calcination with further components to obtain further green briquettes; and (2) a device for calcining the green briquettes by the above method, comprising a shaft furnace, whose inlet is connected with a second silo (170) for green briquettes and a first silo (101) for coal.
