In a method for modifying at least part of a PTFE surface by irradiating with pulsed laser light, the surface roughness is generated in the region to be modified by direct material ablation with laser pulses of wavelength greater than 180 nm, pulse energy density more than 2 J/cm 2per pulse and pulse duration a few nanoseconds. Each point in the surface region is exposed to not more than 1-15 of the radiation pulses. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for bonding a PTFE surface to another surface by modifying at least part of the PTFE surface, applying an adhesive (specifically a cyanoacrylate or epoxy adhesive) to at least one of the surfaces and mechanically contacting the two surfaces, where the surface modification stage is carried out using the above pulsed laser procedure; and (2) a component with a PTFE surface, at least part of which has been modified by the above procedure.
