The device (4) has a memory (7) i.e. non volatile electrically EPROM, for storing a predetermined network address. A network interface (8) couples the device to a data network (1), and a switching element (5) is provided for generating a control signal. A control device (6) is coupled with the memory, the network interface and the switching element. The control device transmits a data packet with a predetermined activation sequence and the predetermined network address to the data network via the network interface during the reception of the control signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for configuring an autonomous switching device with a memory.
