The device has a catalyst unit (10) post treating an exhaust gas of an exhaust gas flow (11), and an adding unit (12) adding a component during the post treatment of the exhaust gas. The adding unit adds fluid and has a fluid tank, and a selective catalyst reaction takes place by the catalyst unit. A guiding unit including a feed-in main direction is aligned opposite to a flow direction provided for the exhaust gas flow. An exhaust gas expansion unit (17) extends flow cross section surface for the exhaust gas flow. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas post treating device.
