The method involves inputting material of a workpiece using a configurator i.e. graphics program, and compiling data from the configurator into machine control data, where the configurator is operated by computers e.g. personal computer (1) and server (2). The machine control data are transmitted to a machine tool. Dimensions and/or contours of the workpiece are graphically input by a user using a mouse (5), an electronic pencil, a keyboard (6) or touch screen, where the workpiece is partially designed as a free-form workpiece by the user. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer for performing a method for producing a free-form workpiece (2) a computer program having a set of instructions to perform a method for producing a free-form workpiece.
