The method involves providing a filter (4) and another filter (10), whose color is different from the color of the former filter. The filters are loaded with dust or soot particles from a sample part of the gas sample. The loaded former filter and the loaded latter filter are irradiated with light. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining the dust or soot particle concentration in a gas sample or the degree of contamination of a filter for quantitative classification of coefficient of gathered particle content of the gas sample.
