The device has an electrical humidity sensor (2) including open-ended non-insulated conductors (21, 22) arranged on a carrier (1). An electrical or electronic switch unit (3) is connected with the sensor and determines occurrence of humidity at the sensor. A signal generator is controlled by the switch unit. The sensor is covered by a liquid-permeable cover of fleece or textile material. The switch unit and the signal generator are designed such that a shock signal e.g. flash signal, is delivered to an animal for a defined time period. The humidity sensor is used as a mat/support pad. The carrier is made of plastic strips, moisture-repellent coated or impregnated cardboard or paper strips.
