The device for carrying out an alfin process, comprises a vessel (2) with a melting area (2a) for the reception of a melt from aluminum or aluminum alloy, and a holding device (3) for a workpiece (4) made of iron or iron alloy to be immersed into the melt. The vessel comprises a gas area (2b) arranged above the melting area for storing a protective gas and the gas area is connected with a protective gas supply (7). The gas area covers the total free surface of the melt. The vessel is covered by a cover element, which has a centrally arranged opening for guiding the workpiece in the vessel. The device for carrying out an alfin process, comprises a vessel (2) with a melting area (2a) for the reception of a melt from aluminum or aluminum alloy, and a holding device (3) for a workpiece (4) made of iron or iron alloy to be immersed into the melt. The vessel comprises a gas area (2b) arranged above the melting area for storing a protective gas and the gas area is connected with a protective gas supply (7). The gas area covers the total free surface of the melt. The vessel is covered by a cover element, which has a centrally arranged opening for guiding the workpiece in the vessel. The holding device comprises a holding element lowerable in the melting area for the workpiece. The vessel has a heating device and the protective gas is nitrogen or argon. A heating device is provided for heating the workpiece and the gas area extends itself between the melting area and the heating device. An independent claim is included for a method for carrying out an alfin process of a workpiece.
