The device has primary and secondary coils (7, 6) that are wound in opposite directions. A switch includes a contact gap for directly interconnecting of connections of the coils. The coils are fed with current independent of each other for exerting magnetic force acting on an electromagnetic switching element. The coils are arranged in series to each other, and a control unit controls the switch such that current flows through the primary coil to shift a drive pinion of a motor vehicle into movement.
