The system (1) has a position detection unit (5) arranged in or at a vehicle (2) for determining a position of the vehicle. A transmission device (6) arranged in or at the vehicle automatically transmits the actual position of the vehicle in case of theft or accident by global system for mobile communications (GSM)and/or Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The transmission device evaluates quality of position determination of the actual position and transmits the evaluation together with the actual position. An independent claim is also included for a method for locating a stolen and/or crashed vehicle.
