In a method for engagement of a starting pinion of a stator device in a gear ring of an internal combustion engine, during the engagement process characterizing measured on the internal combustion engine vibrations, whereby for the case that an oscillation characteristic value is outside a permissible range of values, the control of the starting pinion is varied.
