The melting furnace for melting glass, comprises a wall made of a refractory material (102) having an opening, where the wall defines an inside turned to the melt, and a heating arrangement having an electrode holder (100) connected to a heating electrode (101), where the heating arrangement is introduced into the opening of the wall so that the heating electrode partially protrudes into the interior of the furnace. The electrode holder is arranged in the melting operation of the furnace with a distance of its leading edge turned to the melt, to the interior side of the wall. The melting furnace for melting glass, comprises a wall made of a refractory material (102) having an opening, where the wall defines an inside turned to the melt, and a heating arrangement having an electrode holder (100) connected to a heating electrode (101), where the heating arrangement is introduced into the opening of the wall so that the heating electrode partially protrudes into the interior of the furnace. The electrode holder is arranged in the melting operation of the furnace with a distance of its leading edge turned to the melt, to the interior side of the wall with a setting depth of 60 mm. The electrode holder has a coolant pipe (103) and the minimal distance from the holder leading edge to the coolant pipe is 5-50 mm. The width of the gap between the electrode holder and the refractory material is 30 mm. The electrode holder has a chamfer (108) at the transition from the holder leading edge to its outer peripheral surface and has an opening for receiving the electrode that is widened conically in the holder leading edge. The electrode holder has a ceramic coating in the contact area between the heating electrode and electrode holder. An independent claim is included for a method of operating a furnace for melting glass.
